It’s funny, isn’t it? Here we are, standing on solid ground yet floating in space, standing still yet revolving in place, at home on the street where we live in a great, big world that’s just a little, blue bubble in the cosmos. What’s a person to do? To think? So many choices! A universe of possibilities! An infinity of story telling combinations. So it seems to Calgary musician and artist, Wayne Immonen. Whether it’s placing gas masks on the icons of Western art, co-opting pop art or interpolating the Universal movie monsters into quotidian scenes, he enjoys creating surprising and delightful series of situations one or two steps from reality. One such series to which he’s recently returned is the juxtaposition of wild animals in Calgary’s downtown core. Called ‘Re-wild’, it asks us to imagine our unpredictable and untamed neighbours sharing our highly designed and dependable urban space.
